His obituary lists his place of birth as Alleghany Co., PA although it is thought he was born in Wheeling, WV. He was a partner in the firm that built the Washington County courthouse in 1867, the oldest courthouse and jail in Minnesota. He was a 1st Lt. in the 1st Minnesota Regiment during the Civil War and was wounded twice during the Battle of Gettysburg.
